Sadly, it only runs on genuinely ancient smart phones. I can’t even re-purpose my old pre-loved phones that I’ve kept after upgrading, because most of them are still too new for postmarketos

In the last 18 monts, they’re enabled explicit sync, which was pretty much the turning point in making NVIDIA drivers/GPUs usable. On top of that, they’ve open sourced the kernel modules.

It’s very very different to what it was even 2 years ago.

Yep! It’s been largely trouble free for a year or so now.

but I’m getting bad flicker in Wayland.

I had some issues the specific combination of NVIDIA card, Wayland running Plasma and VRR. But I disabled VRR, and it went away.

I started using linux full time about a year ago. I started with Arch, but moved to Cachy really quickly when I discovered it. All of the advantages of Arch, but repos optimised for modern hardware, and a whole heap of useful pre-configured tools, like Wine/Proton, fish, snapper etc. Arch is a bare bones, pick and configure your own setup rolling release distro. Cachy is a pre-optimised, rolling release distro with lots of useful stuff right out of the box.

The one thing I’ve been thinking about (but haven’t yet done) is using it for the Insta 360 camera app (an app for editing/exporting videos from 360 panoramic cameras). It’s actually more feature rich than the desktop version, which doesn’t have a linux version in any case, so using it to quickly reframe my videos and export them to something non proprietary would be a whole lot easier…

Maybe I’ll try and get that working today…

It means you won’t end up with dual boot breaking one of your installs, you won’t accidentally overwrite anything etc.

If you’ve got two slots and a modern motherboard, you can do the same thing but keep both m.2 devices installed. If you really want to be sure, take out the windows device, install Linux on the second, and then put the windows device back in. You’ll be able to swap back to windows if needed that way without swapping things out

Yeah, it’s extra work, and doesn’t change the infuriating aspect of enshitification, but it’s an option if you absolutely do not want to sign in to the app

For what it’s worth, you can generally record a GPS tracking in another app or on another device and then use your photo editing software to add the coordinates to the photos after the fact.

I use a AW34234DWF on plasma in HDR mode. I love it. It’s worth it. I do a lot of photo work with it. Mostly I don’t run games in HDR though, because it involves gamescope, which is more hassle than it’s worth for me
