That lets you connect to your own pc from anywhere, not exactly how the vpns you typically use work. Same with storage, ppl reccomend backups on the cloud and selfhosted. If you value your data might as well make sure you never lose it in case something goes wrong.

Self hosted doesn’t always have to be a huge time sink - Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliances are getting pretty nice.
