2·3 months agoWhile I love manga and the artwork… I read and comprehend words much, much faster. For a massive opus like One Piece, I would love a novel version of the manga that I could dig into, with the novel and manga chapters lining up or notated, so I could go back and read chapters of the manga and enjoy the artwork for especially key or poignant scenes. Then I could start just consuming the manga and anime in real time… Right now it’s just too daunting to start. I’ve seen the first season of live action and anime. I’m very interested, I just can’t justify the time commitment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's one thing your learned at college/university that blew your mind?
6·3 months agoI think this depends entirely on the subject.
I was in a STEM degree and I learned a lot of technical skills. (Super early internet, no YouTube) In the extra classes like marketing, English Lit, I basically learned how to deal with people because of the professors like you describe, group projects, and trying to see the perspectives that didn’t make sense to be initially so I could pass the damn class.
It seemed incredibly stupid at times, but making you think in ways that challenge you in ways you hate and think are stupid is actually excellent training for dealing with the myriad of brain-breaking people on this planet.
High School did this too, but less in your interest. High School was “shut up and do it this way, because that’s how it’s done.” This benefits the Institution.
College was “sure, argue, but here’s why you’re wrong, or if not wrong, you need to be able to see this differing perspective, understand, and navigate it. The world is fucked, there is so much that is morally gray, that you need to learn flexibility. Show me you understand by explaining back to me what I’m teaching you. Don’t just entrench your whole being in what you’ve been taught before coming here.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's one thing your learned at college/university that blew your mind?
6·3 months agoNot the person you asked, but it’s commonly taught as science in a lot of Christian themed curriculums, including a lot of homeschool programs. Source: friends who believed it, and seeing the homeschool program of my step-kids. We had to teach facts on the side and introduce them age appropriately to real science.
“It” being Creationism.
Here’s something fun to learn more: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation_Museum

Oh, Agreed 100% when it’s broken beyond repair. But replacement of a working (yet now inefficient old) AC doesn’t save money necessarily. Not when new units are so expensive.
We are in the south, not Texas, and really need to replace our almost 25 yr old AC. We’ve been repairing and trying to get another season out of it for the last 3 years.
So it’d take 25 years to have enough savings on the power bill (saving $100 a month for 6 months of summer)
Assuming the power company never raised rates in the coming years.
Imagining the body snatcher coming back to the eggy pod and waking us up… “screeeech this sucks, take your life back, too much stresssssss” as they shove us out and climb into the eggy pod.
I’m glad you said jjk… it would have driven me nuts today trying to remember where I know this from.
It’s been on my mind too. Hidden Inventory is in limited run in theaters right now. I want to go, but hate crying in public.
I remember reading Ron DeSantis (governor of Florida) said he did this on dates. He would say Thigh Food for Thai food. If they corrected him he wouldn’t date them again.
He’s married now and I wonder if his wife ever offers to pick up Thigh food for dinner.
Anything ginger (ginger ale, ginger beer, spicy, not spicy) as long as it’s fizzy. Not all the time, these are treats.
Most root beer. A&W is solid. There’s one I don’t like with perfume undertones.
We make our own seltzer and it’s my favorite. But any ice cold seltzers will do.
If I’m in a restaurant and craving soda, I get a coke or diet coke.
In the US South, an ice cold Cheerwine made with cane sugar in a glass bottle.

5·5 months agoReal butter for things where you can taste it. Store brand for things where the other flavors are more overpowering and don’t really notice the butter.

5·5 months agoI got a tortilla press and masa harina. I will not buy premade corn torillas again. Masa isn’t that expensive, add salt, water, mix, press, and cook on a dry pan (or super lightly oiled, i put a very light layer on mine since it’s cast iron)
So much tastier than store bought and better texture.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your advice for someone driving their first manual transmission car?
7·5 months agoThis is what I was going to say. Practice hills.
Practice taking off from being parked uphill.
Practice taking off from being stopped downhill.
People will park/pull up almost to your bumper and give you very little wiggle room.

I still have the throw blanket.
