Here’s a couple of shots of those, I’ve also got a couple on the previous days post with them. This one is kinda weird because I’m breaking it into 3 posts (Maryland Heights/overlook, Harpers Ferry Town, and then today’s John Brown Museum; plus the protest post from two weeks ago) and I try to only do 4-5 photos per post so it’s not overwhelming. For the town post I just wanted a few of the historic buildings. The flickr album also has more of everything, although for the Harpers Ferry stuff and upcoming John Brown stuff, it’s basically just all of the sign posts I saw in case they keep removing things.

I believe the closed trail is coming back from the overlook section, which I also did as part of the loop (but many were doing without going all the way up first). Or at least there was a trail that looked like a shortcut that was partially blocked by limbs. I almost took it as well, sounds like a good thing I didn’t!

Great shot! That one was on my list of to-do’s while there, but unfortunately the majority of the time I was there everything was fully socked in a cloud and you couldn’t see more than five feet away. Came back through after going up to Harpers Ferry to do the Old Rag trail, but then I again got socked in by the clouds.

Yeah it worked out pretty well with having no group in front of us and then the group behind us was full capacity so they took forever. Was able to find gaps where there were few people to avoid… No, I wish I had gone to the Kentucky Knob since I drove right by it, I’ve heard similar to what you said about it. Lived near the one in Frankfort KY for a little a long time ago, but it was a private residence so I’ve inly seen the exterior.

That’s correct, here’s a better photo to show those low deck walls, it’s from the upper deck instead, but same deal. And if you go over, it’s as much as four or so floors down to a bedrock stream. A lot of things in that house definitely would not pass code haha, those stone steps really gave one of the other visitors issue.

Yeah, if I heard correctly from one of the guys doing some of the upkeep, it cost 8 million a year to keep it up! Although I think that includes a all upkeep for the property like employees, grounds, and things other than just maintenance. But even so, it sounds like it is a constant battle with the place to stay on top of the upkeep. Also, it now being a unesco World Heritage Site now apparently comes with a lot of required projects that cost money, although I couldn’t name any.

A fairly large renovation was done maybe 18 months ago I believe, and then when I was there they were finishing up for the year with a bunch of work on the roofs and bridges, basically anything that was poured. I believe the poured concrete used river rocks as opposed to crushed rocks and as a result it doesn’t hold together well and is in constant need of attention. A friend of the family who is a civil engineer said they also did a big project almost 20 years ago working on the anchors for all of the cantilevered things, but I’m not sure any of the derails for that.

…Yeah the tour guide said as long as I didn’t impede the flow for the tours then he didn’t care if I went nuts on the photos, so I definitely did haha.

Absolutely, this house has the right blend of expansive but still contained. I typically am far more interested in the natural settings and landscapes than manmade structures and agree about it being more to my liking than more lavish structures that take over a locale. This house has been on my list of places to visit for a while and it did not disappoint.

I believe the town is Slateford, NJ; but am unsure of the name of the plant.

Haha, yeah it was apparently ~450k people at the fest. I went to the second Bonnaroo back in the day, which I believe hit a million at the fest, but was like 10x the area for everyone and was still unbelievably packed. I’d imagine for a lot of the crowd it was far more the experience than actually hearing the music well.

They had a fairly large ‘archaeology’ exhibit at the museum, but I’m not sure if anyone ever went over it with an actual metal detector. Kind of related, they said the main medical issue at the fest was cut feet from all the old rip tab beer cans.

Hell yeah, fireplace fit for a king (or hotel magnate as it were).

Yeah, the downtown was a cool mix of old and new (although driving a transit van through it was less than enjoyable haha). Probably won’t end up posting it, but the geology museum at the university (5th largest uni in Canada I believe) was pretty cool as well.

Absolutely, I’d seen plenty of pictures before, but just seeing that much water move is really wild.

Hell yeah! I was with my mom, who is very much not into heights. Struggled even looking over the railing when on the American side haha.
